We had a blast our first 4th of July here in Louisville. We had a huge BBQ at a local park with pretty much every student from our stake (at least it seemed that way), there were medical and dental students and probably a few others mixed in...those were just the dominant ones. It was a lot of fun getting to meet new people and getting to talk to everyone. We are only one of two or three couples that don't have kids in our school group so it's a little different for us I guess. Hopefully that will change soon. ;) It was a pot-luck so everyone brought their own meat and something to share, it was delicious.
After that we went to the Louisville Slugger Field to watch the baseball game. One of our first year dental student friends set the whole thing up and about 20 people came, not counting kids, it was pretty awesome.
I honestly can't even remember if they won or lost, none of the women were too interested in the game anyway and a lot of the guys weren't paying attention either. They let you stay there for the fireworks over the river so that's the whole reason we went. I think next year we'll take our chances with the Riverfront part though. Watching fireworks through a gate is about as fun as it sounds. We couldn't see them from our seats on the lawn so we had to stand up by the gates around the outside of the field so that kind of sucked. They were pretty good fireworks though. The game was still going because they went into extra innings so sadly their stadium lights were still on so that was lame. I managed to get a few decent pictures though....
We're excited to see Thunder Over Louisville next year which is during the week of the Kentucky Derby and we've heard that the fireworks for it are a lot more impressive than for the 4th of July. They also do them over the river so we'll probably go to the park for that too. We missed our families though, it just isn't the same without having a few family gatherings on either side.
I am really enjoying my new job and working from home, it's so much less stressful than working in a pharmacy and I don't miss it at all. It allows me to do a lot more to take care of the apartment and do some personal things that I wouldn't have any chance of doing anywhere else. For example, I read A LOT! I really mean a lot too. I've gone through eight books since moving here and I'm loving it. I've really missed reading and didn't realize how much till I started again. I've toned it down a bit and am a little less obsessive over them so I manage to do more than sit around with my nose in a book, plus it helps that I have the whole Harry Potter series on my iPod so I can just listen to them while I do everything else. I'm requesting more audio books so that it will give me a little more freedom. I've also been working out a lot more. Jake and I have been trying to run/jog more and make it to our little apartment gym which isn't too bad. I also started a cardio class that is taught by the wife of one of the second year dental students that lives in the complex with us. Holy crap she kicked my butt...and she had a baby 5 months ago! I'm really looking forward to it though, it was a fun class and it will get better once I get used to the steps and get in better shape. I'm also trying to ride my bike on my trainer just about every morning but haven't been as good about it. So here's to losing weight! :)
